Having had the knowledge of the Ancients downloaded into his head a second time, Col. Jack O'Neill successfully modified a Goa'uld cargo ship to fly faster than any known vessel, and he was able to activate the throne chair in the Ancient outpost in Antarctica — thereby emitting an energy beam that obliterated the Goa'uld system lord Anubis and his attack force, saving Earth. Then, with his mind overwritten with more Ancient knowledge that his human brain and body could handle for long, O'Neill placed himself in stasis at the outpost. Dr. Daniel Jackson, Maj. Samantha Carter and Teal'c — his once-bald pate now sprouting close-cropped hair — are eager to go the outpost and find a way to revive O'Neill. However, Stargate Command's new leader Dr. Elizabeth Weir, can't allow it, on the grounds that it would violate the international Antarctic Treaty that prohibits the establishment of a military base or the testing of any weapons at the site. All normal stargate activity has been suspended until all the involved world governments can agree on control of the Antarctic site. SG-1 still has hope that its offworld allies, the Asgard, can restore O'Neill by reviving him with the Ancient knowledge erased, as they did once before. But the Asgard have not responded to communication attempts in some time. Carter suggests they use the modified Goa'uld cargo vessel to fly to the abandoned Asgard homeworld, Hala, in the Othala galaxy. It was on this planet that SG-1 trapped in a time-dilation field the fatally swarming, insect-like machine race the Replicators (who have now achieved human form), thus saving the Asgard and countless galaxies. But the field is due to dissipate and Carter surmises that the Asgard must be monitoring the situation. If SG-1 can get to Hala, they can contact the Asgard personally.

After learning from Dr. Daniel Jackson that the Goa'uld are en route to attack Earth, to confirm the existence of the devastating Ancient weapon, Stargate Command leader Dr. Elizabeth Weir arrests the Goa'uld system lords — Camulus, Yu and Amaterasu — who'd come to negotiate an alliance. On Thor's ship, a communication with Penegal of the Asgard High Council reveals that when the Replicator ship was destroyed over the new Asgard homeworld of Orilla, countless Replicator blocks rained down on the planet and began infesting the Asgard's systems. Evacuation is impossible: The Asgard had stored their peoples' minds in computer systems for travel, and later, on Orilla, placed them into cloned bodies. But the Replicators have now infected the systems needed to store those minds again. If the Asgard lose this battle, their peoples' minds will perish along with their bodies. High above Earth, Col. Pendergast — commander of the Prometheus, the sole SGC combat spacecraft — braces for battle with the Goa'uld. But to his surprise and relief, the vessel that suddenly hails them is the Daniel Jackson, captained by Earth's ally Thor, Supreme Commander of the Asgard fleet. Teal'c and Thor have a plan to save both Orilla and Col. O'Neill, who lies in stasis with the entire knowledge of the Ancients in his mind. Only the Asgard can remove the knowledge before it kills him — yet only with the Ancient knowledge can O'Neill create a weapon capable of defeating the Replicators.

Aboard the International Space Station in Earth's orbit, Cosmonaut Anatole Konstantinov barely avoids being struck by part of Anubis' destroyed mothership as it passes under the station — leaving a smoky trail that rises up and passes into the station unnoticed. Down on Earth, at Stargate Command, Brig. Gen. Jack O'Neill, the newly promoted chief, is drowning in paperwork when Col. Alexi Vaselov introduces himself as a new transfer. Vaselov, Russia's most highly decorated and experienced officer, has requested to be assigned to SG-1 now that there's a new opening for the fourth position, following O'Neill's promotion. But O'Neill refuses on the grounds that the colonel will have to go through Stargate Program training like any other recruit. Dr. Daniel Jackson, feeling Vaselov deserves an explanation, goes to see him. Vaselov is disturbed by O'Neill's decision and is showing signs of fatigue. Suddenly, Vaselov collapses. With Vaselov in isolation, attending physician Dr. Brightman informs O'Neill of the colonel's condition. The last thing Vaselov remembers is being in Russia. He doesn't know how he got to Stargate Command. Dr. Brightman also tells O'Neill that Vaselov has lesions covering forty percent of his body and that he might be contagious. Everyone having had contact with him must be examined. Daniel is just about to go offworld with SG-11 when the stargate shuts down. Daniel grabs a team member and holds him hostage at gunpoint, demanding that the stargate be reactivated. Teal'c fires his zat at both Daniel and his hostage, but Daniel gets up and fires wildly, wounding two Special Forces guards. O'Neill shoots him in the shoulder and Daniel falls to the floor, motionless. It's Dr. Brightman's opinion there is a contagion on base. O'Neill immediately orders all offworld teams to 'gate to the safe-haven Alpha Site and not return to Stargate Command — which is now in lockdown.

Five days to zero hour: Brig. Gen. Jack O'Neill is having a busy time managing his new duties as head of Stargate Command — even with Radar O'Reilly-like help from the familiar 'gate-room technician, Sgt. Walter Harriman (whose surname in previous episodes was Davis). The president is coming, and O'Neill is up to his behind in paperwork, in food and bunting approvals and in debriefing SG-2, just back from its mission to planet P8F-809. But at least O'Neill has a new administrative aide: former CIA analyst Mark Gilmor, assigned to this post by former SGC commanding officer Gen. George Hammond. After O'Neill leaves for yet another meeting, Gilmor places a mysterious phone call, telling the person at the other end that O'Neill doesn't suspect a thing. Later, after cajoling from SG scientist Dr. Seymour Lee, O'Neill reluctantly authorizes the arrival of an alien plant that SG-8 brought from P6J-908 for analysis. Lt. Col. Samantha Carter, Dr. Daniel Jackson and Teal'c inform O'Neill they have a stargate address in the former domain of the recently defeated Goa'uld system lord Anubis — a site that his power-mad rival Ba'al apparently hasn't claimed yet and which might be home to an abandoned base where a cache of Goa'uld weapons might exist. Teal'c has a Jaffa ring-activation device that should give them access into the base. But with 14 SG teams all offworld and unavailable for backup, O'Neill holds the mission back one day — which irritates his old teammates, who believe even that might be too long a delay.

Dr. Daniel Jackson is in a farmhouse on another planet, recovering from serious wounds. Attending him is Leda. Three months earlier, SG-1 had visited this planet in the hopes of making new contact. The stargate, which the people here call "The Great Ring of Avidan," is an exhibit in a museum. SG-1 was welcomed by Commander Gareth, leader of a nation called the Rand Protectorate, and his chief aide, Jared Kane, who is Leda's husband. They explain how the ring has become a cultural and fashion symbol to the people of their planet, though the more religious ones believe that the gods who created all life and once ruled on this planet will someday return through the ring to reward the faithful. SG-1 realized those "gods" were the Goa'uld, and warned Gareth of the danger that his people might face. Daniel had remained behind to negotiate with the Rand Protectorate. He then reported back to Brig. Gen. Jack O'Neill, Lt. Col. Samantha Carter and Teal'c that the Rand Protectorate and the planet's other primary nation, the Caledonian Federation, have been locked in a cold war for decades, with enough weaponry to wipe each other out. In two days, Daniel said, Gareth intended to broadcast a national address in which he will reveal the existence of not only the stargate, but of the Goa'uld as well. Unfortunately, as a result of SG-1 coming through the stargate as they did, religious zealots who were once considered a fringe took it as a sign that their belief in the gods returning is true. O'Neill said it's not Stargate Command's problem, but Daniel convinced him to let him go back to try to prevent a civil war.

Goa'uld supersoldier drones have breached the gate room and have killed Brig. Gen. Jack O'Neill. In a bold move, Teal'c retrieves a modified P-90 sidearm and takes out the drone. Teal'c thinks that this was much too easy — and when he gets out of the virtual-reality chair, like the ones SG-1 had encountered on planet P7J-989, he says so to scientist Dr. Lee. O'Neill and Lt. Col. Samantha Carter agree with Teal'c that the VR chair is useless as a training tool against the Goa'uld and their supersoldiers. The only way it can be made more realistic is if the chair is programmed from the experiences of one who has fought the Goa'uld. Teal'c is willing to go along with an experiment during which the chair will learn from his actions within the scenario, making it harder and more realistic as he plays. But as Teal'c plays the VR "game," it quickly equals his level of expertise and surpasses him. Each time he dies in the game, he gets a shock from the chair. While the shocks are not lethal, the cumulative effects, as Dr. Carmichael points out, could give Teal'c a heart attack or drain his adrenaline levels lethally. The game resets each time Teal'c dies, because it knows from reading Teal'c's actions and his mind that, in reality, he would never give up until the Goa'uld are destroyed. However, Teal'c might not be up to the task: If he doesn't defeat the three Super Soldiers (one of whom is cloaked) and disable the Naquadah generator set for overload by a Goa'uld spy on base — whose identity keeps changing every time the game resets — he will never win and the chair will kill him. He's already being kept alive by an adrenaline feed, and the machine won't let him escape the game by using the built-in fail-safe — taking the elevator down to level one — because it knows he really would never quit until either he or they are dead.

Teal'c, having finally been cleared to live off-base, settles in to his new neighborhood. His neighbors love him. He's quiet, and he has become a sort of protector of his community, having most recently defended a driver against three bullies. Not everybody is as pleased about Teal'c's civilian assimilation. The recent incident with the bullies has come to the attention of Col. Richard Kendrick in the Office of Special Investigations (OSI), who pressures Brig. Gen. Jack O'Neill to have Teal'c removed from the civilian population. He realizes that Teal'c has helped save Earth a couple of times, but having an alien living at large in the civilian population is already drawing unwanted attention. O'Neill sends Dr. Daniel Jackson to Teal'c's apartment to convince him to keep a low profile, which Teal'c agrees to do. Later, though, when Teal'c does nothing as a woman's purse is snatched in front of him and her groceries strewn all over the street, his neighbors, including a skateboarding teen named Eric, egg him on to help. So he throws an avocado a full city block and knocks the thief out cold. He also comes to the aid of another neighbor, a pretty young woman named Krista James, who is being abused by her boyfriend. Krista believes that Teal'c has recently moved here from Mozambique and is Dr. Jackson's research assistant. She asks Teal'c to teach her some defensive moves. They seem to be attracted to one another. Then Krista's abusive boyfriend, Doug McNair, comes back into the picture, and Teal'c sees that he has beaten her. She begs Teal'c not to intervene, so Teal'c simply warns Doug that if he ever harms Krista again, he will kill him where he stands. An elderly neighbor overhears the hallway dispute. Unbeknownst to Teal'c, all his moves are being monitored through a powerful lens somewhere nearby.

The truth is out there, and Alec Colson, CEO of the global conglomerate and defense contractor Colson Industries, is going to make sure the truth goes out to the world. Claiming he has shocking proof that the government is covering up a liaison with aliens, and that Earth was almost destroyed by an alien invasion, Colson gives all nations involved 24 hours to come clean or he'll do it for them. Brian Vogler, Colson's COO, right-hand man and best friend, begs Colson not to proceed with this plan. For the sake of the spread-thin company's stock, Colson can't afford to lose credibility or to have the government, their best client, turn against him. Despite his friend's pleas, Colson is determined. At Stargate Command, Brig. Gen. Jack O'Neill, Lt. Col. Samantha Carter, Dr. Daniel Jackson and Teal'c watch Colson ramble on TV. Carter had worked with Colson briefly on the F-302 space-jet's control systems (though he didn't know what it was for). She tells O'Neill that Colson owns several Earth-observer and weather satellites. It's possible they could have photographed Anubis' fleet in orbit, or the battle over Antarctica. O'Neill sends Daniel and Carter to convince Colson to back off. It doesn't work. Time's up. Colson shows the world his evidence that aliens exist: Into the pressroom walks … an Asgard! Carter confers with Earth's alien ally Thor, Supreme Commander of the Asgard fleet, who says that no Asgard is currently on Earth. That, coupled with the fact that this one didn't speak and had a vacant expression, suggests that it isn't an Asgard. But what is it?

Teal'c is ticked off. He and his mentor, Bra'tac, have just returned from the planet Ha'ktyl, where they tried to convince the warrior-woman rebel leader, Ishta, to wait until her fellow insurgent Jaffa grow numerous enough to wage war against all the Goa'uld system lords at once. Ishta feels she can't wait, because the system lord Moloc is ordering the death of every female Jaffa born in his domain. Ishta has been preparing and organizing a battle against Moloc for a year, and she will not change her mind. But that's not what is really bugging Teal'c. It seems his son Rya'c has fallen for a Jaffa warrior-woman named Kar'yn. They are to be married in three days. Ishta approves of the match. Teal'c, however, is concerned that the commitment of raising a family will conflict with Rya'c's fight against the Goa'uld. Meantime, one of Ishta's warriors has gone missing and might have been captured by Moloc's loyal Jaffa forces — who could have forced her to reveal the base at Ha'ktyl. Brig. Gen. Jack O'Neill grants Ishta's people sanctuary at Stargate Command until Lt. Col. Samantha Carter can find them a suitable new planet for resettlement. Hewing to tradition in the face of war and uncertainty, Rya'c and Kar'yn plan to be married as scheduled, albeit on Earth. The rehearsal doesn't go well — Kar'yn refuses to bow in front of her husband-to-be, because she, like all of Ishta's people, believe themselves to be equal (if not superior) to men. Rya'c is insulted. The two lovebirds storm off.

The stargate is gone! It vanished from Stargate Command right under the noses of the personnel on duty. Impossible? Not with Asgard beaming technology. Yet why would Earth's alien allies do that? It must be something else — and upon investigation of the surveillance tapes, Lt. Col. Samantha Carter, Dr. Daniel Jackson and Brig. Gen. Jack O'Neill notice a scientist tagging the stargate with a locator beacon so that whomever was using the transporter could lock on to it. That scientist, one Dr. Kevin Hartkans, cannot be found. It looks like this is the work of The Trust — rogue former agents of the National Intelligence Division (NID) taking whatever ruthless action they deem necessary to protect Earth from alien invaders. Teal'c, after meeting with rebel Jaffa leaders on planet P4S-161, has found he cannot 'gate back to Earth. He goes to the fail-safe Alpha Site, where Col. Pierce confirms the interrupted contact with Earth. Teal'c returns to P4S-161 to borrow a ship to fly back to Earth — and finds thousands of Jaffa mysteriously dead with no sign of violence. With another new arrival, the Jaffa M'zel, Teal'c returns to the Alpha Site.

Unscheduled offworld activation: Lt. Col. Carter's IDC comes through, but it's an old one. A text message follows: "Send M.A.L.P." The M.A.L.P. telemetry shows that the person sending the transmission is Carter — but Carter is in the control room at Stargate Command. The Carter on the other side explains that she was made in Samantha Carter's image. She is a Replicator, created by Fifth, the Replicator leader smitten with Carter. Struggling to reconcile the original Carter's copied feelings and her own Replicator programming, Carter 2 asks that she be destroyed via the disrupter — the only weapon effective against her kind. Carter convinces O'Neill to allow a meeting between her and her Replicator twin at the Alpha Site. At the rendezvous, Teal'c trains the disrupter on Carter 2, who tells Carter that Fifth is coming to this galaxy to conquer it. Because Carter 2 shares Carter's feelings, she doesn't want Fifth to succeed. Carter tells Carter 2 that the Asgard have amplified the disrupter effects to repel a large-scale attack. But Carter 2 says that the Replicators, herself excluded, are now invulnerable to the disrupter. Carter 2 secretly communicates with Fifth through subspace, telling him that the humans are beginning to trust her, but she needs more time. Later, Carter 2 tells Carter and Teal'c that Fifth was able to introduce a cipher into the Kiron pathways that control the molecular cohesion of all Replicators. This is how he was able to counter the effects of the disrupter. Carter asks Carter 2 to access the cipher through the Replicator subspace link so they can use it to modify the disrupter.

With the Atlantis team unheard from since they left, a mission has been greenlighted to take the starship Prometheus to the Pegasus galaxy. Dr. Daniel Jackson wants in. Gen. O'Neill says no; Daniel is too valuable to risk. O'Neill's decision is overridden by the mission commander — none other than Gen. Hammond, former leader of Stargate Command and now head of homeworld security. Hammond needs someone who can speak and translate Ancient and feels that no one is more qualified for this mission than Daniel. Hammond has assigned himself to lead this mission, having sat on the sidelines for so long as he sent many people out into the unknown, many of whom never came back. Owing to the dangerous nature of this mission, the Prometheus takes off with only a skeleton crew: SG-3, commanded by Col. Reynolds; a flight crew; and several scientists, including one Dr. Lindsey Novak. While in hyperspace, the Prometheus receives a distress call from 50 light-years away (20 minutes' flight time) from what sounds like a human female. Daniel suggests they check it out. Upon arrival, they find two Goa'uld vessels adrift, a cargo ship and an Alkesh. The scenario looks suspicious; a human distress call from a Goa'uld ship? Reynolds and SG-3 ring over. They find four dead Jaffa. The ring transporter is activated: A Goa'uld super-soldier leaves the Alkesh and boards the Prometheus. Hammond and the crew are overpowered by the super-soldier, transported onto the Alkesh and stranded as the Prometheus goes into hyperspace — with Daniel still aboard. Tied up on the bridge of the Prometheus, Daniel tries to communicate with the super-soldier, who removes her helmet to reveal herself as a beautiful woman named Vala. Getting right to the point, she demands the access code to the Prometheus' hyperdrive.

Report from Tok'ra Intelligence: The war between Ba'al and the system lords has reached a critical stage. To escape Ba'al, Lord Ares is fleeing to a planet he once conquered, drained of Naquadah, then abandoned. Coincidentally, it's the same planet on which Brig. Gen. Jack O'Neill (at that time a colonel) granted his treacherous but likable old buddy, Col. Harry Maybourne, asylum from his enemies on Earth. O'Neill sends SG-1 to get Harry back so that the Goa'uld won't get him. When the team arrives, Lt. Colonel Samantha Carter, Dr. Daniel Jackson and Teal'c are confronted by a medieval hunting party armed with crossbows. The sentries take SG-1 to see their ruler, King Arkhan — who turns out to be none other than Harry Maybourne. Harry knows the Goa'uld are coming and knew that SG-1 would arrive. He claims to be able to "read" the future. His predictions have saved his people from meteor showers, floods and other disasters. Consequently, the people made him king — and Harry is loving every minute of it. What Harry is really reading are engravings, written in the language of the Ancients, carved on the stone walls of the remains of a temple. The writings are a record of the planet's history. They detail major events — some of which haven't happened yet. Daniel translates the part that deals with the present: "The oppressors of old will return and seek dominion over the land." Obviously, the text is referring to the Goa'uld. Daniel continues translating: "But those of another world will come to vanquish evil and restore order once again." Harry has already told his people that SG-1 are those very off-worlders. Unimpressed, Carter tells Harry to pack his bags, because they're just here to relocate him again, not take on a system lord.

Brig. Gen. Jack O'Neill comes home to find treacherous former Vice-President Robert Kinsey in his living room. Kinsey tells O'Neill that he can help him take down. The Trust — a group of rogue NID agents who, to date, have usurped control of an Alkesh, tried to steal the stargate and attempted to wipe out the Goa'uld (along with millions of innocent Jaffa) with a symbiote poison. Kinsey was working with The Trust until he became an embarrassment to the White House and was forced to resign. Now, in return for a big payday, The Trust wants Kinsey to arrange a meeting with Gen. Ruslan Kiselev, the Russian Minister of Defense, to stir up a war with the United States. O'Neill grants Kinsey protection. Kinsey is wired for sound and video. The meeting isn't what Kinsey expects: While Lt. Col. Samantha Carter, Teal'c and Daniel Jackson have him under surveillance, he and The Trust agents are beamed aboard their Alkesh, which cloaks and escapes. O'Neill sends Teal'c to the Prometheus and Daniel to Moscow to try to meet with Kiselev and find out what's going on. Daniel's beautiful Russian liaison, Capt. Daria Voronkova, arranges the meeting, but Daniel is picked up by the Russian military and interrogated. An American allegedly has been caught trying to assassinate Kiselev. Daniel sees the suspect on a video monitor. It is Kinsey, his eyes glowing. He has been turned into a Goa'uld.

Seven years ago, Joe bought an attractively carved stone at a garage sale, from a man whose grandfather found it on an archeological dig in Egypt. Joe picked it up and immediately began having vivid, virtual experiences of traveling through the stargate and being in action with SG-1 — living their adventures. Joe started telling his stories to his kids, his neighbors and his customers. Everyone in town soon heard of Col. O'Neill and Stargate Command. They've heard about the downfall of the system lord Apophis and the rise of Anubis; the threat of the Goa'uld; SGC's alliances with the Asgard, the Jaffa and the Tok'ra; Daniel Jackson's death and ascension and his return to Earth; and countless other adventures. Teal'c, Bra'tac and Carter ring to the planet below and escape through the stargate to Stargate Command, where Jacob/Selmak of the Tok'ra has already arrived and informed Gen. Jack O'Neill of the situation: Many Goa'uld ships across the universe are now in Replicator hands. Furthermore, rebel Jaffa are repledging their allegiance to the Goa'uld by the thousands in the face of this new threat, the likes of which they have never encountered. Teal'c and Bra'tac conceive a bold plan to regain the allegiance of the Jaffa: They will capture the sacred Temple of Dakara, the very symbol of the power the Goa'uld have over the Jaffa. If they can take it and hold it, the Jaffa will realize that the Goa'uld are false gods and rebel again. The temple is deep within Ba'al's territory. But with Ba'al so busy battling the Replicators across the galaxy, he has left only a minimal force guarding the planet: Now is the time to strike.

Hidden in the ruins of the temple on Dakara is an Ancient weapon powerful enough to destroy the Replicators and all life in the galaxy. Thanks to Ba'al's timely warning, Gen. O'Neill, Lt. Col. Samantha Carter and her father, Jacob/Selmak, know it. And thanks to Dr. Daniel Jackson's repressed Ancient knowledge, from when he was Ascended, Replicator Carter knows it, as well. It's only a matter of who finds the weapon first. Carter and Jacob/Selmak arrive at Dakara. Teal'c shows them a wall marked with Ancient writing. It's a good bet that the weapon is behind it and that the writing is the key to opening the wall. Despite Selmak's efforts to decipher it, all he comes up with is gibberish. Time grows short. Teal'c informs them that sensors show Ba'al's fleet will arrive within the hour. On the Replicator ship, Replicator Carter has only just begun to probe Daniel's mind for the secrets of the Ancients and the way to destroy Anubis. On Dakara, Carter figures out how to decode the writings, and she opens the wall. Inside, they find the weapon. They are about to plant the bomb to blow it up when Jacob/Selmak notices that it works much like the disrupter O'Neill built using Ancient knowledge to defeat the Replicators. Consequently, this weapon might possibly be modified to work only on the Replicators. Ba'al arrives and begins attacking the rebel fleet. Bra'tac orders the fleet to fall back, hoping to lure Ba'al into an ambush from rebel forces hidden behind the moon, but Ba'al doesn't take the bait.

With the planet of Dakara and the Ancient weapon now in the hands of the Free Jaffa, Anubis plans to reconquer the planet and, thanks to Ba'al's modifications to the stargate, use the Ancient weapon to destroy all life in the galaxy at once. At Stargate Command, Lt. Col. Samantha Carter introduces her fiancé, Pete Shanahan, to her father Jacob and his Tok'ra symbiote, Selmak. Later, Teal'c, Bra'tac, Carter, Jacob/Selmak and Gen. O'Neill discuss the delicate situation on Dakara: The Free Jaffa Nation is now in control of the Ancient weapon. They are reluctant to destroy it, because it has become a symbol of their freedom and also ensures their safety. O'Neill argues that no one should be allowed to wield that much power: The weapon must be destroyed. The council decides to seek out and kill Anubis (if he can be killed) and defeat the Goa'uld. Once that is done, they will reconsider destroying the weapon. Their intelligence reveals that Anubis might be marshalling his remaining forces on Tartarus. The Jaffa will strike him there. Meanwhile, having been fatally wounded by Replicator Carter aboard her ship before it was destroyed, Dr. Daniel Jackson finds himself in a diner in which he once ate as a boy. His waitress is Oma Desala, who once before helped Daniel to Ascend. She gives Daniel the choice to Ascend again or walk out the diner door, which leads to an ordinary death. The patrons at the restaurant (all Ascended) watch Daniel and Oma very carefully. No one there will talk to Daniel except for Oma and a rotund businessman named Jim. Jim explains that he and Oma operate a bit beyond the rules of the Ascended. He also shows Daniel the latest headline in the Ascended Times, which reveals Anubis' "Dastardly Plot to Regain Ancient Weapon of Destruction."

The world has lost one its unsung heroes: Catherine Langford, Daniel's mentor and one of the pioneers of the Stargate Program, has passed away. She has left Dr. Daniel Jackson her vast collection of archeological tomes and artifacts. Among the items, Daniel finds an original 1889 edition of The Eye of the Sun, the only one in existence. The book details the customs and rituals observed by the ancient worshippers of the sun god Ra. More important, it contains a reproduction of a wall painting, discovered by German archeologists near Giza in 1885, that depicts a ceremony over a religious artifact, which Ra's worshippers referred to as "The Heart of Light." It is clearly a Zero Point Module — the Ancient power source that could power not only Earth's defenses, but also open a wormhole to the Pegasus galaxy. Satellite sweeps of the Giza plateau show no traces of the ZPM's energy signature. Whether Ra took it with him when he left Earth is unknown. The SG-1 team might not know where the ZPM is, but they know where it was: Giza, in the year 3000 B.C.E. Against Carter's better judgment, she, O'Neill, Daniel and Teal'c take the Puddle Jumper equipped with the Ancient time-travel device back to 3000 B.C.E., with O'Neill — the only one who possesses the Ancient gene required to fly the craft — at the controls. With the jumper landed and cloaked in ancient Egypt, the team infiltrates Ra's temple and treasure chamber and takes the ZPM. There's just one problem: A sandstorm occurs during the heist, partially burying the cloaked jumper, thereby rendering its outline visible. The Goa'uld discover the craft but can't operate it because they lack the Ancient gene. Regardless, they keep it under guard, preventing the SG-1 team from escaping.

In an alternate timeline, civilian scientists Samantha Carter and Daniel Jackson have followed the videotaped instructions of their alternate selves in Egypt, circa 3000 BCE, and have helped Gen. Hammond and his team unearth the stargate at Antarctica. It's now ready to send a team to the planet Chulak, where they will find Teal'c, who, according to the tape, will be needed to repair the altered timeline. The only member of the future SG-1 team missing is Col. Jack O'Neill. Thanks to his old war buddy, Maj. Kawalski, O'Neill is coaxed out of retirement for this mission. Daniel and Carter are still out of the loop, but Carter convinces Gen. Hammond, O'Neill and Kawalski that they will need the tactical advantage of the Puddle Jumper they found in Giza because they will no doubt be encountering a hostile and technologically advanced enemy. And because O'Neill, who, according to the videotape, is the only one with the Ancient gene needed to fly the jumper, is now here, they have that advantage. O'Neill is convinced that these geniuses might be worth taking along. Kawalski and his team, along with O'Neill, Daniel and Carter, fly to Chulak through the stargate. There they are met by Jaffa soldiers loyal to the Goa'uld system lord Apophis, taken prisoner and locked in a cell. Apophis' First Prime, Teal'c, questions them. O'Neill tells Teal'c that that they know he secretly hides his resentment of the Goa'uld and his belief that Apophis is a false god, and that in an alternate future he frees the Jaffa. Teal'c, hiding his true feelings, calls this blasphemy and takes Daniel to see Apophis. Teal'c returns to the cell, with Daniel's video camera. He asks that O'Neill and company show him the proof of their claim. Teal'c is convinced and brings the team their weapons and vests. A drained Daniel is returned to the cell and the team, using their explosives, breaks out and heads for the jumper. They are met by Teal'c, who kills Daniel. Teal'c explains that Daniel was a Goa'uld. In order to probe Daniel's mind thoroughly, Apophis implanted a Goa'uld symbiote in him. Apophis knows everything Daniel knew. He now perceives the Tauri (Earth humans) as a threat and is sending an armada of Hatak-class vessels to invade Earth. Daniel's symbiote was to be a spy for Apophis.
