Shirley Temple stars with former United States President Ronald Reagan as Mary Hagen, a young woman trapped in the vicious rumors of her fellow townsfolk who claim she is the illegitimate daughter of lawyer Tom Bates (Reagan). Although it turns out that she is actually an adopted orphan, the rumors turn to outrage as Bates develops a romantic relationship with Mary, and they leave town together to marry.
