Streamline collaboration with the General Availability of comments in Power Apps and Power Automate

If you are a Power Platform user, you know how important collaboration is when it comes to building custom solutions with your fusion team. We continue to hear from our customers about the need for additional capabilities that improve maker collaboration, and we are dedicated to meeting this need. That’s why we’re thrilled to announce the General Availability of comments for Power Apps and Power Automate. You and your team can comment with ease when building canvas apps, model-driven apps, and Power Automate flows.

How to add comments

For Power Apps, makers can interact with comments in the Canvas Studio & Modern App Designer.

In the Canvas Studio, you can easily add comments by right clicking on (1) the “…” of any item under Tree View or (2) component in the canvas area, or (3) selecting the “Comments” button on the command bar in the top right-hand corner of the screen. Additionally, you can tag colleagues in the comments by using “@” and their name, and the tagged colleague will receive a notification email so they can get to the comment quickly & easily. If you tag a user that doesn’t have access to your app, then you’ll be prompted to share the app with them. Finally, makers can edit, delete, resolve, and reopen comments like Office commenting experiences we enjoy.

In the Modern App Designer, you can add a comment to an item in the Navigation pane, including areas, groups, pages, tables, and dashboards. Just select any of these items and then select the “Comments” button on the command bar. Comments are visible to anyone who has access to the app, and you can reply to comments and have threaded discussions about specific parts of the model-driven app. Additionally, makers can edit, delete, resolve, and reopen comments in the Modern App Designer.

Comments feature in app designer

For Power Automate, makers can add comments by selecting ‘…’ within each action card or by simply clicking on the comments pane from the top and tag a colleague to give feedback by simply using “@ mention” within the comment pane. If the flow has not been previously shared with a colleague, the user will be prompted with a ‘Share and notify’ option that will share the flow and send an email notification to the colleague. Additionally, comments can be threaded, edited, deleted, resolved, and reopened similar to Office commenting experiences.

Move comments across environments for model-driven apps

But that’s not all! You can move comments for model-driven apps across environments, making collaboration and app development even more seamless. While comments in model-driven apps can’t be exported or imported as solution components because they contain user collaboration data, you can easily export the Comment table to Excel and import it into the environment you want. This means that user collaboration data can be transferred between environments, making it easier to continue working on your app no matter which environment the app lives in. Additionally, we are working to enable this same capability across Power Platform.

How to enable comments

Great news! You don’t have to do anything to enable comments in Power Apps & Power Automate. These features are turned on by default in both so you & your colleagues can jump right in and start using these capabilities immediately. Note, comments are supported for environments that have a Dataverse database.

Looking forward

We’re excited to see how comments in Power Apps will improve collaboration and streamline the app development process.
