Bugs, bugs, bugs

I was excited about this dock, until I got it home and realized it only works one monitor, externally. If you connect a second, it won't work. Spend hours with tech support for Microsoft, who acknowledged that many people have this problem, but they can't seem to fix it. Should not be sold, until the figure out this bug. DON'T BUY ONE.

Great product, why no HDMI?

I love the versatility of my Surface Pro, but this docking station seems to be woefully missing an HDMI port or 2 that would make it truly worth that price tag. MiniDisplay ports are great (and a nice way to add another purchase on top of the dock) but it sounds like a majority of the scaling/display issues could be remedied with this small addition. The product currently available is basically a fancy Charging USB Hub with an Ethernet port on a product that already has a MiniDisplay port and headphone jack...

Listen to the Reviews and RUN!

Did not read the reviews and now I got burned. Experiencing same issues that everyone is having. Unable to connect using mini-DP -> HDMI using dock ... works fine when connected directly to Surface Book. No alternate available since the Surface line opted to use proprietary connector instead of USB-C. Listen to your customers and fix your product!

Provides great versatilty

I'm not sure what the issues are for anyone else or why, but I have been using this product for a full year, it worked fine right out of the box, and I have never had any problems. I use it to hook up to a large flat screen monitor, surround sound audio speakers, and an external CD/DVD drive. It also charges the Surface while it is docked, and I never give it a thought, which is a good thing!

Far Too Many Issues and Unresolved Problems

3 days since I bought this and many 10s of hours spent trying to get it to work. The first issue is that the dock firmware needs to be updated out of the box. This involves downloading a firmware update app from Microsoft and then running a firmware update procedure. It's fairly straight forward to follow but it failed twice without any error message and so it took me a couple of hours of messing about to update it. The second issue was that connecting the dock kills the wifi. Microsoft have a trouble shooting list for this problem with various updates and diagnostic apps which can be downloaded from their support site. However non of these overcome the issue that the USB 3.0 Dock interferes with 2.4Ghz wifi. The two actual solutions to this issue is to use the docks wired Ethernet or to update your router to a dual band router and force the Surface to use 5Ghz. This overcomes the interference issue. I went for the wired solution which involved moving all my stuff to another room and now I find that the dock drops the Ethernet connection every time the Surface goes to sleep and intermittently looses connection during normal use. Apparently this can be fixed by changing the USB power management settings in the device manager. I had to find all this out for myself by reading several non-Microsoft forums. I have spent about 20 hours trying to solve these issues so far and have had a totally unsatisfactory experience with this product especially considering it's overinflated cost. I would NOT recommend this product unless you are willing and able to bug fix it yourself.

Replaced my Surface Tablet and Desktop Tower

I bought this dock along with a Surface Book to replace my Surface Pro 4 and desktop PC. The dock functions flawlessly after firmware update.

works great with my 4K monitor.

This dock improves on the old model. It now has two display ports and plenty of USB 3 connections. The corded design keeps the bulk of cords at the back of my desk and keeps my work area neat. Its reliable with my surface pro 3 and surface book. My sp3 screen can be set to any angle, unlike the old dock. Sound output and Ethernet add a nice touch. I use 2 of these. Some complain about not working with multiple 4K monitors. The is a device limitation, not the dock.

GREAT IDEA BUT DOESN'T WORK

When I saw the Surface Dock I was ecstatic, as it promised to connect everything I needed to my Surface Pro 3 at the same time. Unfortunately none of the ports work, with the exception of USB. I'm disappointed, Microsoft!
