Matthew and Diana return from Elizabethan London to discover a chaotic scene. Peter Knox’s attack has left Em dead and Sept-Tours in shock. Amongst the darkness comes the news that Diana is carrying twins. At an emergency meeting of the Congregation, Agatha insists that Knox be removed but at a personal cost. As Em is laid to rest, Diana is comforted by the return of a familiar face, and Baldwin makes a demand that shakes up the de Clermont family.

Diana and Matthew are shocked to be reunited with Jack Blackfriars; when they last saw him in the 16th century, he was a human boy, but now he is an adult vampire. As Chris seeks more samples from Matthew’s family to research blood-rage, Matthew and Diana learn difficult truths about Jack and about Benjamin, Matthew’s wayward son. Finally convinced that the only way to help Jack is to find a cure for blood-rage, Matthew and Marcus head to New Orleans while Diana searches for the Book of Life.
In New Orleans, Matthew and Marcus struggle to reconnect with Marcus’s children. In London, Diana and Phoebe hunt for the missing pages from the Book of Life and find a lead in the British Library. Diana uses her magic to discover a link to one of the missing pages, leading her to Andrew Hubbard—but Knox is a step ahead of her. Matthew finally confronts the New Orleans vampires, who challenge him to name every single murdered vampire or face consequences.

Worried about Matthew’s long absence, Miriam arrives in New Orleans and tries to convince him to return home. In London, Diana, Phoebe, and Sarah are struggling to pin down the elusive T.J. Weston and seek help from other witches. Meanwhile, in Venice, Satu is introduced to Benjamin, who has a proposition for her. Finally returned home, Matthew asks Baldwin to ratify the scion, but Baldwin is reluctant. Just when everything appears to have come together for Diana, she goes into labor.

Benjamin’s plan to bring down the de Clermonts is set into motion when a captive witch, Lena, escapes him. Matthew and Diana return to Sept-Tours to hold a christening for the twins. In Venice, Baldwin reveals their plans to Gerbert, who demands he bring the babies to him in order to be examined. Fearing for the safety of the children, Ysabeau offers Matthew and Diana the option to flee and hide from the Congregation, but they are determined to fight.

After receiving Benjamin’s message, Matthew leaves Sept-Tours at dawn to track him down. Diana enlists the help of Fernando and Sarah to come to Oxford and finally get the Book of Life. Fernando undertakes a separate, private mission, enlisting a reluctant Gallowglass to their cause. Gerbert explains his plan for the reconstitution of the Congregation to Baldwin. Matthew sees Benjamin again after hundreds of years, and father and son begin a fight to the death.

Matthew is near death, being slowly tortured by Benjamin, while his family desperately tries to find where he’s being held. Diana makes plans to rescue him, but first she must face down Satu and vanquish Benjamin. While Matthew gradually recovers, Diana travels to Venice to take on the Congregation. Gerbert attempts to complete his long-term plan to remake the Congregation in his own image, but revelations from the Book of Life illuminate the long-hidden secrets of creatures.
