Amid the changes transforming the country at the beginning of the twentieth century, bounty hunter Thomasine (Vonetta McGee) and the bandit Bushrod (Max Julien) resume an old romance. As cars replace horses and trails turn to roads, the "wild" west of 1910 is gradually being tamed. And though it's still a tough, hard place to make a living, Thomasine and Bushrod are prepared to try. After Bushrod avenges his sister's murder by a bank robber, Sheriff Bogardie (George Burdock) goes after him with a ruthless and determined intensity. Hounded by the sheriff, Thomasine and Bushrod take up robbing banks order to survive, sharing their loot with the poor living on the harsh frontier. And when a "Wanted" poster leads to their capture, Bushrod's old buddy, Jomo (Glynn Turman), comes to the rescue. Now a trio, they plan one last bank robbery in order to raise the money for a ranch where they can settle down to raise horses. Yet, in a grim hunt for lovers who have so successfully defied the law, Bogardie finally catches up with Thomasine and Bushrod.
