Surface cameras FAQ

Here are answers to some common questions about using the two Surface cameras and the built-in Camera app.


How do I get started using the cameras?

Open the built-in Camera app:

  • From the Start screen, tap or click the Camera app.

If you’re using another camera app from the Windows Store, the steps may vary.

Why can I take photos but not videos (or the reverse)?

The Camera app is ready to take photos by default. To switch between photo mode and video mode:

Step 1: On the Start screen, tap or click the Camera app.
Step 2: Tap or click the video icon Video mode to begin recording video.
Step 3: When you’re done recording tap or click the stop icon Stop recording.
Like your photos, your videos are saved to your Camera Roll in Photos.

Is the camera facing the wrong way?

If you see your face when you want to see what’s going on in the room, you can toggle between the two cameras. To switch between the front and rear-facing cameras:

Step 1: From the Start screen, tap or click the Camera app.
Step 2: Swipe up from the lower edge of the screen, and then tap or click
Change camera Change camera button.

How do I turn off the camera click?

You can turn off the shutter sound the camera makes by muting the volume on Surface. This will turn off all Surface sounds.

Step 1: From the Start screen, swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and tap Settings.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Settings.)
Step 2: Tap or click the speaker volume icon Volume icon.
Step 3: Adjust the volume slider all the way down to mute the sound.

How do I turn off the camera privacy light?

The small privacy LED light that displays near the active camera when you shoot video or take pictures can’t be turned off.
