OceanMind
OceanMind uses satellites and AI to track maritime data across fishing and shipping industries. Transparent data helps to track climate impacts, preserve biodiversity, protect livelihoods, and prevent slavery in maritime sectors.
Learn about OceanMind
Challenge
Illegal and unregulated fishing is one of the greatest threats to marine ecosystems, pushing aquatic species to the brink of extinction, throttling local food supplies, and undermining efforts to manage fisheries sustainably. Unfortunately, many governments lack the resources and expertise needed for effective monitoring, control, and surveillance of their marine areas to stop illegal fishing operations.
Solutions
OceanMind works with government agencies to protect fishing stocks, pulling public data on vessel positioning into the cloud and tracking each boat in real time. AI algorithms analyze ship movements to identify suspicious behavior, such as staying still for too long or venturing off established routes. Microsoft Azure gives OceanMind the capacity to monitor our oceans and protect marine biodiversity.
Protecting ocean life with the cloud
OceanMind supports the prevention of illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing by analyzing vessel movements in real time. Machine learning identifies suspicious behavior, which OceanMind shares with agencies to direct patrol boats more effectively.

Climate TRACE: Climate action starts with a clearer picture
The Climate TRACE platform provides up-to-date data for human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. As part of the Climate TRACE coalition, OceanMind contributes estimates of emissions from global shipping by tracking data for almost 50,000 vessels in near real time. New insights show that shipping sector emissions are growing alarmingly.

How OceanMind works
An area at risk for illegal fishing activity is identified. Ocean vessel movements are captured via GPS, sonar, and satellite imagery. Data sources are layered on top of AI algorithms to identify behavioral markers of illicit fishing. Government agencies use the insights to manage patrol boats more effectively.
