Autonomous AI and agentic AI defined
Autonomous AI is AI that can make decisions and take actions on its own, without human input. Unlike traditional AI, which requires people to guide it, autonomous AI learns from data, adapts to new situations, and operates independently. Autonomous AI agents are how that capability gets used. A single autonomous AI agent can run a task end to end, and most businesses deploy several AI agents together rather than relying on one. Agentic AI is the broader term for systems that pursue goals and take action on their own. Autonomous agents in AI are the individual programs doing the acting, and autonomous AI is the underlying capability that makes both possible.
