New version of SQL Data Services part of “Azure” CTP

Microsoft’s Professional Developers Conference (PDC) kicked off this week with a bang. We announced the availability of the latest version of SQL Data Services (SDS) (formerly SQL Server Data Services) as well as the SDK toolkit, as part of the Microsoft Azure™Services Platform (Azure) Community Technology Preview (CTP). Also announced was the upcoming CTP of SQL Data Services that will be available on November 1, 2008 with the rest of the Azure Limited CTP.

SDS can be used to store and query structured and unstructured data in a highly scalable and secure, Web-based environment. Since announcing SDS in March 2008, the team has been working to bring greater database functionality to make the service a richer relational database. New functionality of SDS includes the following:

  • Unlimited storage capacity
  • BLOB support
  • Rich queries (joins, Top, OrderBy)
  • Full text search
  • Transactional consistency
  • Built-in Replicas and Backups for Business Continuity
  • SDK (includes tools and samples)
