A sad-eyed leading man, he often played a little guy confronted with social structures he can neither change nor understand. He studied acting at the Rome Academy of Drama. In the early '60s he appeared in Lina Wertmuller's play Two and Two Are No Longer Four, beginning a long association with Wertmuller; he staredr in most of her films, and it is for this work that he is best known. He is a partner in Wertmuller's production company, Liberty films. Onscreen from the mid '60s, he has appeared in many films. For his work in Love and Anarchy (1973) he won the Cannes Film Festival Best Actor award.
