How to update your Surface drivers and operating system

No matter if you bought your computer years ago or months ago, you’ll eventually start receiving software updates to your device. These updates help the drivers and software that make your computer fully functional.

Why are computer software updates important?

Computer software updates, like Windows 11, are important because it gives you access to the latest features and protects you from getting hacked. Computer updates can be minor adjustments to the existing software, or you can update your computer to an internally new system, like going from Windows 10 to Windows 11. Sometimes, you can update your computer software without any additional cost. In that case, downloading software updates only serves as a benefit to you.

Here are important benefits of updating drivers:

Fixes software bugs and security vulnerabilities

Manufacturers design updates to add extra layers of protection to your computer. If you believe that your laptop has glitches or bugs, updating your drivers can fix those bugs and remove what’s causing the glitch. The latest updates can protect you from data breaches, cyberattacks, and identity theft.

Protects your personal information

When your computer has the latest updates, it does a better job of scanning for viruses that can steal your personal data. The update may be coded to recognize new hacking methods. If you try to open a link or download a third-party program, the updated software can alert you to any dangerous features it finds.

Gives you access to new features

On top of the security benefits you’ll gain, sometimes you should update your computer software because you’ll get access to new features, like easy redocking using a compatible Surface dock when reconnecting to an external monitor.

How do you update the drivers and software on your Surface device?

Now that you know the importance of keeping your Surface updated, you’re probably wondering how to update your drivers. Your Surface device may already be updated, but it never hurts to check. To check for driver updates on your Surface device:

  1. Make sure your Surface device is connected to the internet and plugged into its charger.
  2. Attach your compatible Surface dock, Surface Type Cover, or other Surface attachments so they can receive any available updates, too.
  3. Select Start on your Microsoft Surface device.
  4. Go to Settings.
  5. Click Windows Update.
  6. Select Check for Windows updates.
  7. Click Install Now if updates are available.

To download optional updates:

  1. Type View optional updates in your Windows taskbar and click enter.
  2. Select the View optional updates tab in the results.
  3. Check the updates you want to install.
  4. Make sure to also check all the driver updates with the name Surface in them.
  5. Click Install Now.

Keeping your Surface device updated will safeguard your programs, files, and personal information from hackers and ensure you’re enjoying the most up-to-date features.
