Summary

Backdoor:Win32/Berbew.AX.drv.dr is a Trojan that is dropped and executed by Backdoor:Win32/Berbew.AX, which targets computers running Windows 2000 or Windows XP. Backdoor:Win32/Berbew.AX.drv.dr installs a network driver that allows Backdoor:Win32/Berbew.AX to bypass certain software firewalls.   
To manually recover from infection by Backdoor:Win32/Berbew.AX, perform the following steps:
  1. Disconnect from the Internet.
  2. Delete the Trojan registry entries.
  3. Scan with antivirus software.
  4. Restart your computer.
  5. Delete the Trojan file.
  6. Take steps to prevent re-infection.

Disconnect from the Internet

To help ensure that your computer is not actively infecting other computers, you should disconnect it from the Internet before proceeding. Print this Web page or save a copy on your computer; then unplug your network cable and disable your wireless connection. You can reconnect to the Internet after completing these steps.

Delete the Trojan registry entries

To delete the Trojan registry entries
  1. On the Start menu, click Run.
  2. Type regedit and click OK.
  3. In the left pane, navigate to the key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\ndisrd
  4. Right-click the key.
  5. Click Delete and click Yes to delete the key.
  6. In the left pane, navigate to the key:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{6697D5C6-D882-4E78-6C94-887F2C5687F9}
  7. Right-click the key.
  8. Click Delete and click Yes to delete the key.
  9. In the left pane, navigate to the key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ShellServiceObjectDelayLoad
  10. In the right pane, right click the value: mtklef
  11. Click Delete and click Yes to delete the value.
  12. Close the Registry Editor.

Scan with antivirus software

Run a full-system scan with an up-to-date antivirus product. If you don't have antivirus software installed, you can get it from one of several companies. For more information, see http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/downloads/default.mspx.

Restart your computer

To restart your computer
  1. On the Start menu, click Shut Down.
  2. Select Restart from the drop-down list and click OK.

Delete the Trojan file

To delete the Trojan file
  1. Click Start, and click Run.
  2. In the Open field, type <system folder>\drivers, for example, %windir%\system32\drivers
  3. Click OK.
  4. Click Name to sort files by name.
  5. Delete the file ndisrd.sys if it is in the list.
  6. On the Desktop, right-click the Recycle Bin and click Empty Recycle Bin.
  7. Click Yes.

Take steps to prevent re-infection

You should not reconnect your computer to the Internet until the computer is protected from re-infection. See the "Preventing Infection" section for more information.
