Summary
Win32/Zindos.A.worm is a network worm that targets computers running Microsoft Windows 9x, Windows ME, Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP. The worm spreads through a backdoor created by the mass-mailer worm Win32/Mydoom.O@mm. Win32/Zindos.A.worm performs a denial of service (DoS) attack against www.microsoft.com.
To manually recover from Win32/Zindos.A.worm, perform the following steps:
- Disconnect from the Internet
- End the worm process
- Delete the worm registry entry
- Restart your computer
- Take steps to prevent re-infection
Disconnect from the Internet
To help ensure that your computer is not actively infecting other computers, you should disconnect it from the Internet before proceeding. Print this Web page or save a copy on your computer; then unplug your network cable and disable your wireless connection. You can reconnect to the Internet after completing these steps.
End the worm process
To end the worm process on Windows NT, Windows XP, Windows 2000, or Windows Server 2003
- On the Start menu, click Run.
- Type regedit and click OK.
- In the left pane, navigate to the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run - In the right pane, find the value:
Tray <worm-executable path>
Make note of this path name. - Press CTRL+ALT+DEL and click Task Manager.
- Select the Processes tab.
- Right-click the entry with the executable name you recorded in step 4.
- Select End Process.
- Select Yes to end the process.
To end the worm process on Windows 9x or Windows ME
Use a third-party process-control utility to find and end the worm process.
Delete the worm registry entry
To delete the registry value
- On the Start menu, click Run.
- Type regedit and click OK.
- In the left pane, navigate to the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run - In the right pane, find the value:
Tray <full path to the worm executable> - Right-click and choose Delete.
- Click Yes to delete the value.
Restart your computer
To restart your computer
- On the Start menu, click Shut Down.
- Select Restart from the drop-down list and click OK.
Take steps to prevent re-infection
Do not reconnect your computer to the Internet until the computer is protected from re-infection. See the "Preventing Infection" section for more information.
