How to use Quick Assist to get help on Windows 11

Many Windows 11 users run into everyday problems: apps freeze, settings get changed accidentally, printers stop responding, or new features feel unfamiliar. When issues appear, getting help quickly can make a huge difference.

With Windows 11, you don’t need to solve every problem alone. Windows 11 includes a built‑in tool called Quick Assist1 that lets remotely connect to another PC and receive support from someone you know and trust. No technical experience is required. You just need a few clicks and a trustworthy helper. Quick Assist is there for you when you want real help from a real person.

What is Quick Assist on Windows 11?

Quick Assist creates a secure connection between your PC and a helper’s PC. You decide whether the helper can only see your screen or take full control to fix something for you. If you’ve ever tried to explain a computer issue over the phone with no luck, and wished that someone could “just show you,” Quick Assist can help.

What can Quick Assist help you solve?

Quick Assist is ideal for everyday issues, including:

  • Fixing settings that changed unexpectedly
  • Troubleshooting apps that won’t behave
  • Setting up email
  • Connecting printers or Wi‑Fi
  • Walking through Windows updates

Quick Assist comes with tools your help uses to show you where things are and how to use them. For example, your helper can do the following:

  • Point out things on your screen with the “Laser Pointer” tool.
  • Make annotations on your screen.
  • Chat to stay in constant contact with you.

What you need before you start

To get start with Quick Assist, you only need a few things:

  • A Windows 11 PC
  • An internet connection

Your helper needs:

  • A Windows 11 PC
  • A Microsoft account

You stay in control of your computer throughout the session. You are in charge of approving changes or updates, and you can end the session instantly.

How to open Quick Assist on your PC

To quickly open Quick Assist, simply press Ctrl + Windows logo key + q.

You can also open Quick Assist in the following ways:

  1. On Windows 11 task bar, select Start.
  2. Type Quick Assist.
  3. Select Quick Assist.

Or:

  1. Select Start.
  2. Open All apps.
  3. Scroll to Quick Assist and select it.

Once the app opens, you’re ready to get help.

How to get help step‑by‑step

Quick Assist gives you a clear path to follow.

On your PC:

  1. Open Quick Assist.
  2. Select Get help.
  3. Wait for your helper to give you a 6‑digit security code.
  4. Enter the code.
  5. Choose what you want the helper to do:
    • View screen if you only want them to observe.
    • Take full control if you want them to fix something directly.

Windows 11 will ask you to confirm your choice before the session begins.

On the helper’s PC:

  1. Open Quick Assist.
  2. Select Help someone.

A 6‑digit code is displayed on your helper’s Quick Assist screen, and your helper shares this code with you. Once you enter the code and approve access, the session starts.

What you can do during a Quick Assist session

During the session, you can:

  • Chat with your helper
  • Watch the helper’s cursor move on your screen
  • Follow along as your helper explains what they’re doing
  • End the session any time you choose

Quick Assist closes completely when you end the session. It does not stay open in the background.

How to stay safe while using Quick Assist

Quick Assist is secure, and you are always in control of the session.  A few simple habits keep you safe:

  • Only accept help from people you trust
  • Never share your security code publicly
  • End the session immediately if something feels wrong
  • Remember that the helper’s access to your computer stops the moment you close Quick Assist

If Quick Assist isn’t working

If Quick Assist won’t connect or open, try these quick fixes:

  • Install the latest Windows 11 updates
  • Check your internet connection
  • Close and reopen Quick Assist
  • Sign out and sign back in if the app asks you to

Most issues clear up after a restart of the app or your PC.

Help is only a few clicks away

Quick Assist gives you a simple, safe way to get real help on Windows 11 from someone you trust. The next time you need help on your Windows 11 PC, you don’t have to struggle alone. Open Quick Assist, connect with your helper, and let them help you find a solution.
