Who should apply for the Climate Innovation Fund?
The Climate Innovation Fund focuses on energy, grids, water, efficiency, supply chains—such as low carbon materials and fuels—ecosystems, and scaling viable technologies globally.
Model
Microsoft’s Climate Innovation Fund (CIF) seeks to catalyze and scale critical climate markets by investing ahead of market adoption. Our capital helps seed emerging markets, accelerate technology development, and enable companies to move from innovation toward commercial scale.
Beyond capital, CIF can help portfolio companies access Microsoft’s technology, expertise, relationships, and global ecosystem. By supporting promising solutions at pivotal stages of market development, CIF aims to reduce barriers to growth, attract additional investment, and help build the capabilities and supply needed for economy-wide decarbonization.
Mission
The primary focus of the Microsoft Climate Innovation Fund is to:
- Invest in emerging climate technology solutions that have early commercial traction and need capital to scale in the market
- Invest directly in companies, with opportunities to:
- Scale new innovative solutions in the market
- Demonstrate the viability of new technologies
- Partner with other investors to meet the world’s climate objectives
The Microsoft Climate Innovation Fund does not have a mandate to:
- Provide grants or donations
- Lead an investment round
- Take a majority ownership stake in a fund or company
- Fund publicly traded companies
