Top AI trends of 2023

Artificial intelligence (AI) has gotten to be a hot topic in popular culture of late, with generative AI bots being more readily available to the general public. We’ve started to see what exactly AI can accomplish when used for identification, voice cloning, content creation, and so much more. With AI entering the mainstream, these are some AI trends we’ll start to see this year and going forward.

  • Voice technology
  • Cybersecurity
  • Conversational AI
  • Generative AI
  • Increased availability
  • Increased regulation
  • Medical advancements

Take a look at how we might see these trends take hold this year and in the future.

Voice recognition and cloning technology.Voice recognition and voice cloning can be both incredibly useful and equally dangerous. When using AI for voice recognition, consider what it would be like to use your voice to unlock your phone instead of another biometric system like your fingerprint or facial recognition. You could speak a password to your phone from across the room to unlock it, rather than inputting your PIN or holding it up to your face. Your “voiceprint” will be recognized rather than your fingerprint.

In contrast to voice recognition, voice cloning can cause problems with the clarity and credibility of digital content creation. AI voice cloning software can replicate your or anyone’s voice and read something you’ve written. For example, if you’re making a short video for YouTube that you want to be narrated by Morgan Freeman, voice cloning can make it happen.

Cybersecurity. One of the benefits of AI is that it can perform tasks at a much faster rate than humans. For instance, let’s say that you have 40 pages of data to read through and then analyze. That could take several days to compile the information in a thorough and complete way. AI, on the other hand, can process and analyze that same amount of information in just a few minutes. This level of processing can be used to assess cybersecurity risks and response speeds and create a viable solution. Cybersecurity can quickly improve for both commercial and personal use.

Service automation with conversational AI. Not every business can afford to staff a customer service call center during regular business hours, much less 24 hours a day. Conversational AI makes it so they don’t have to. A chatbot service embedded into a website can provide 24-hour service to more customers at once than most small customer service centers with live chat and useful information about products, services, and more. It’s fast, efficient, and cost-effective when you don’t have tens of thousands of dollars a year to spend on customer service agents.

Content creation through generative AI. Generative AI has made the biggest impact in mainstream culture since late 2022 with its creativity in content writing, music, code writing, and art. As it stands today, generative AI algorithms can create content that feels brand new and original, despite the fact that it’s based on the content sourced from a database or across the internet. The content will continue to improve as these databases grow and the AI continues to get feedback and “learn” from usage. We’re already witnessing the creation of lifelike images, quality written content, functional computer code, and catchy music—and it’s going to get even better as AI improves and databases grow.

Making AI more readily available. Until recently, AI use was limited to the tech industry juggernauts that produce widespread operating system software, hardware, and more. With the release of open-source AI, it’s become more readily available for everyday use. It’s become easier to make AI widely available to the masses as it’s become more cost-effective and easier to develop with current technology. With public access to AI technology, the general public can use it to write blog posts, create beautiful art, and even help build a website.

Increased regulation. With the way things stand in the early days of widely available AI, it’s a little bit like the Wild West. Anybody who knows how can build an open-sourced AI algorithm, collect information, and build a large database. Currently, there are no standards or requirements for transparency in how the algorithm works, information sourcing, data retention, or bot moral compass. While it might seem like a bot can’t have a moral compass, creating a machine that teaches users how to commit immoral and unethical acts without getting caught is possible. Regulations will also help to improve how we interact with AI in our everyday lives by keeping it from violating basic human rights, like the right to privacy.

Medical advancement. The medical field is always growing and advancing in ways many of us can’t understand. Improvements in biotechnology and drug development continue to move at an astronomical pace, but there’s still a long way to go before we can cure many infectious diseases and other conditions. AI can assist providers with advanced diagnoses, analyze blood work and biopsies, customize treatment plans, provide virtual exams, and even reduce provider oversight. Ultimately, we’ll start seeing improved care and more positive outlooks with conditions that were once taken as grim.

As AI grows in our everyday lives, we’re going to continue to see evolving AI trends. Creators are working on trying to improve the everyday function and viability of AI software to continue to serve unique needs in industry, in the creative space, and even at home.
