End of support refers to the end of technical support and security updates for Windows 10. This version of Windows will no longer get free software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes.

PCs running Windows 10 will still function, but Microsoft will no longer provide technical support, feature updates, security updates or fixes which expose your device to a greater risk of viruses and malware.

An update is a change within a specific version of a Windows product. An upgrade is when you change OS versions, for example moving from Windows 10 to Windows 11.

Most applications, devices, and accessories that work with Windows 10 are compatible with Windows 11. You can also check with the software, device, or accessory manufacturer to confirm compatibility.

After October 14, 2025, Microsoft Office and Office LTSC will continue to run on Windows 10 but will not be supported. To maintain a supported configuration, customers should upgrade to Windows 11 and consider subscribing to Microsoft 365. Those using older versions of Office should note that support for Office 2016 and Office 2019 also ends on October 14, 2025. Learn more and view related timelines.

Support for Microsoft 365 apps on Windows 10 has ended on October 14, 2025. Although these applications will continue to run on Windows 10, we strongly recommend upgrading to Windows 11 to avoid performance and reliability issues with using those apps over time.

If you aren’t able to upgrade to Windows 11 Pro at this time, you have other options available through ESU. ESU is a paid program that will entitle eligible Windows 10 PCs 4 to receive critical and important security updates after Windows 10 reaches EOS. See When to use Windows 10 Extended Security Updates. The program provides critical and important security updates, but will not provide other types of updates or technical support. ESU for organizations and businesses on Windows 10 can be purchased through the Microsoft Volume Licensing Program, at $61 USD per device. The subscription can be renewed annually for up to three years, with the cost increasing each year. You can also extend the life of Windows 10 devices for three years with a Windows 365 subscription 5 , which includes ESU while providing access to Windows 11 through the cloud. Learn more at When to use Windows 10 Extended Security Updates | Windows IT Pro Blog.
Note that commercial scenarios are not eligible for the consumer ESU program, as described in Windows 10 Extended Security Updates | Microsoft Windows.
