The Best Time to Buy a Mattress

The average human spends about a third of their life asleep in bed, so it makes sense to assume that a quality mattress is not just a want, but a necessity. While a big purchase like a mattress does last a long time, they must eventually be replaced. You may feel overwhelmed when beginning to shop for a new mattress; there are hundreds of companies who each claim to have the best product on the market. While it may take some time for you to decide which brand or style to choose, we’ve taken the guesswork out of choosing the best time to buy a mattress.

When Do You Need to Buy a Mattress

The best time to buy a mattress is when you need one, but it can be difficult to tell when your current bed has truly run its course. If any of the following conditions apply to the mattress on which you’re currently sleeping, it may be time to start shopping around:

  • You constantly wake up tired and fatigued as the layers of your mattress become less stable.
  • Your mattress has deep body impressions where you normally lay when you sleep at night.
  • You experience aches and pains in your neck, shoulders, back, and/or hips due to the layers of your mattress softening and not providing enough support.
  • You find yourself waking up with a stuffy nose thanks to allergies that are aggravated by dust mites making a home in your mattress.
  • Your current mattress is over eight years old.

If you’re not getting restful sleep and your mattress has some age on it, it may be time to consider a replacement.

The Best Month to Buy a Mattress

May is the best month to buy a new mattress.

Generally, mattress manufacturers roll out new models in June, so stores want to get rid of their older stock—often by selling at discounted prices. Memorial Day sales are common online and in brick-and-mortar stores and typically run mid-May through the holiday weekend. During this time, it’s not uncommon for retailers to lower their prices by 60 percent!

Best Times of Year to Buy a Mattress

If purchasing a new mattress isn’t an option when the deep discounts in May roll around, don’t despair. Retailers will typically put mattresses on sale during the months of February and September as well. And these discounts tend to coincide with the long weekends containing Presidents’ Day and Labor Day. In February, retailers bet on consumers recovering from their Christmas spending; in September, many retailers are nearing the end of their fiscal years and want to ensure their end-of-year sales numbers look good.

While February, May, and September are known for being the best months to buy a mattress, they are not the only time to get a great price on a new bed. Other mattress deals can typically be found around New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday.

If the idea of laying on a floor-sample mattress at a store makes you feel icky, Amazon Prime Day is a great opportunity to find a new mattress at a very affordable price. And with so many online retailers attempting to break into the market, if you find a brand you like, keep an eye on their sales.

Budgeting for a New Mattress

A new mattress can be an expensive undertaking. This seemingly simple purchase can become pricey if you’re upgrading to a larger-sized bed, simply because of all the new things you’ll need to acquire to make it work. If you had a twin bed and decide to pull the trigger on a California King, you’ll need new bedding, a mattress pad and protector, a new supportive bed frame, and possibly a new box spring (though many new mattresses no longer require them). And once your new mattress is delivered, you may need to find someone to take your old mattress. (Many mattress retailers will handle this for you, but always ask ahead of time.)

These costs can add up quickly, so it’s smart to stay on top of your money with Microsoft’s financial management templates. Create a budget and see where you’re spending and where you can save. Save up for a big purchase like a new mattress by using a savings estimator to define your savings goal and visualize your plan details over time. These helpful tools can help you take advantage of the best time to buy a new mattress, or any major purchase. Best of all, you’ll be able to rest easy in your new bed, knowing that you made a smart purchase and managed your money wisely.
