Learn how to save for college with AI

A college degree opens career doors and offers experiences you’ll remember forever, but saving for college can be tricky. With AI at your side, saving and budgeting for college is easier than ever.

Budget more effectively

You’ve probably been urged to budget many times in your life, and doing so is sound advice if you want to save enough for a college education. Use generative AI to help establish a budget based on your monthly income (or money received by a benefactor, like a parent) and other payments like car insurance, rent, credit card debt, food and groceries, phone bills, textbooks, leisure activities, and of course, establishing a college savings account. Provide your AI assistant with your exact expenses, and it can formulate a budgeting plan that aligns with your goals, whether they include aggressively saving or having plenty left over for activities.

Try prompts like these to get started:

  • Help create a budget for a college student that emphasizes [your goal], considering the following expenses: [your expenses].
  • I’m a new parent. Help me understand how much to put into a college savings account to help pay for my child’s college education.

Get financial tips

Many college students are thrown into the thick of adult life and may not be the most financially literate, as many schools do not teach financial literacy. Being financially literate is essential to students who want to effectively save for college while leading a comfortable life. While AI cannot replace a professional financial advisor or give financial advice, it’s great for educating yourself before taking out loans or making other financial commitments. For example, you could ask, “What are the pros and cons of private and federal loans?” or “How do I avoid predatory loan companies?”

Don’t restrict yourself to loans, though; get advice beyond college finance, including credit card management, paying taxes, and retirement planning—many of which are new to young adults.

Calculate loan payments

Leverage search AI to research loan providers to help you determine your best option. When you find loans, have AI compare them by their interest rates, loan terms, and fees. If your loans are already picked out, use AI to calculate your monthly payments. This will help you understand how much college will cost after graduation. Simply gather your loans’ interest rates and principal costs and have AI divide and calculate the sum; for example, say, “Here are my chosen loans and their interest rates, principals, and fees. Please calculate my monthly loan payment.”

Find scholarships

Search AI is excellent for finding scholarships on the web that you may have trouble finding with traditional search. These scholarships can be catered to your career, financial background, specific interests (hobbies), academic achievements, and more. For example, you could ask AI, “Locate scholarships for blossoming poets.”

Analyze spending habits

As you move through college, stay on top of your finances by using AI to analyze your spending habits and get on track to achieving your goals. Go through your transactions throughout the month, plug them into your AI conversation, and tell it to “analyze your spending habits and pinpoint areas for improvement.”

Whether you’re saving for your kids or yourself, affording college is more doable with careful planning and effort. Get more AI tips and tricks for conquering everyday life, and try Microsoft 365 to boost your productivity and finance management today.
