A Sense of Body

This paper considers the relationship between the things people do, their body as a thing related to these doings, and the connection between this and what computers let that thing, them, their body do or be understood as when mediated by the computer. It suggests that there are a number of possible shifts that can be imagined in relation to this duality: a duality about the self, the body, on the one hand, and how this is mediated by digital technologies on the other. In particular, there is an intertwining of the two, it is proposed, an intertwining of the body/self and the computer, that can lead to strange consequences as regards what is understood as the ‘who’ or the ‘what’ (a particular body say) behind acts mediated by the digital shift and alters.
