Lead Researcher

About

I am a researcher in the Multimedia Search & Mining group at Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA) in Beijing.

My research interest is to explore the novel and practical problems in the era of big data and multimedia, using machine learning and data driven technologies. The projects I am working on include web image retrieval and annotation, image understanding, sketch-based image search, and sketch/shape understanding.

Projects

Sketch2Cartoon: Composing Cartoon Images by Sketching

Established: March 25, 2014

We built the Sketch2Cartoon system, which is an automatic cartoon making system. It enables users to sketch major curves of characters and props in their mind, and real-time search results from millions of clipart images could be selected to compose…

Sketch2Tag: Automatic Hand-Drawn Sketch Recognition

Established: March 25, 2014

We built the Sketch2Tag system for hand-drawn sketch recognition. Due to large variations presented in hand-drawn sketches, most of existing work was limited to a particular domain or limited pre-defined classes. Different from existing work, Sketch2Tag is a general sketch…

MindFinder: Finding Images by Sketching

Established: August 12, 2010

Sketch-based image search is a well-known and difficult problem, in which little progress has been made in the past decade in developing a large-scale and practical sketch-based search engine. We have revisited this problem and developed a scalable solution to…
