Hakan obtained his Ph.D. from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1999. His Ph.D. was on algorithms for medical image reconstruction. He worked at IBM TJ Watson Research between 1999-2002. He focused on speech recognition there. He was a faculty member at Sabanci University between 2002-2016. His research there included a broad range of problems in speech and image processing including biometrics, sparse signal recovery, video analysis and audio source separation. He joined Microsoft Research in September 2016. His current research interests are audio source separation and far-field speech recognition.
