About

Mercy Muchai is a Research Engineer at the Microsoft Research Africa, Nairobi Lab. She guides the end-to-end AI/ML engineering processes within the Nairobi research lab. Her current work focuses on building Globally Equitable AI models and tools that can reason over videos, voice, images and text with a focus on improving Generative AI models’ linguistic and cultural understanding of underrepresented communities and languages.

Her recent work includes leading the research and development of PazaBench, the Paza Speech Models and co-creating the Gecko Playbooks – toolkits for building more Equitable AI systems. She is passionate about driving innovation that is inclusive, rethinking the Future of Work for the Global Majority and conducting AI research that bridges today’s AI gaps through community-participatory approaches. Muchai is also a Computer Science graduate student at the University of Texas at Austin.
