A Short Introduction to DIMACS,  Fred Roberts, DIMACS

Fred Roberts gives an overview of the DIMACS center founded in 1989, after a nationwide competition, as an NSF Science and Technology Center (STC) with the theme of fostering research, education, and technology transfer in discrete mathematics and theoretical computer science. Over the years, its scientific scope and size have expanded to include 14 academic and industrial partner institutions, including Microsoft Research, and 350 affiliated scientists. DIMACS has hosted over 30,000 visitors through its workshops, visitor programs, and research and educational activities. The center’s research has led to the publication of over 75 books and numerous research articles. Over 100,000 college and high school students nationwide have used its educational modules and other materials.

David Pennock touches on some of the connections between DIMACS and MSR-NYC, including their interdisciplinary scope, partnership, history of experimentation, support for education, support for women in STEM, summer school programs, and their research in decision making, learning, data science, ethical algorithms, and optimization.
