Thomas G. Bognanno has been the President and CEO of CHC: Creating Healthier Communities since 2006. Prior to that, Tom had a distinguished 20-year career with the American Diabetes Association (ADA), serving at several levels in the organization at the state level in New Mexico, Missouri, and Texas. He was promoted to Special Assistant to the CEO in 1998 before becoming Chief Field Officer in 2003. Prior to ADA, he spent six years with the American Cancer Society. Tom was instrumental in revitalizing the community-level infrastructure of ADA and prioritizing volunteer and staff development. He was also one of the chief architects of the Everyday Choices for a Healthier Life partnership with the ADA, the American Heart Association, and the American Cancer Society. At CHC: Creating Healthier Communities, formerly Community Health Charities, Tom leads the organization in its ever-expanding and evolving role as a catalyst for health, wellbeing, and equity. CHC represents thousands of high-impact nonprofits nationwide, working to address the barriers to good health. CHC connects them with capital from corporate, foundation, and government partners to power transformative change and create resilient communities. In partnership with CHC’s national board of directors, Tom has significantly increased the organization’s focus on the social determinants of health, the underlying factors that affect overall wellbeing. Tom serves on several nonprofit boards including ZERO: The End to Prostate Cancer where he chairs the nationwide Prostate Cancer Patient Advisory Board. He also has been appointed to a national steering committee for Pfizer related to cancer patient participation in clinical trials. Additionally, he serves as Secretary for the Board of Directors for the Institute for Sustainable Development. Residing in northern Virginia, Tom and his wife, Suzan, have been married for more than 35 years and raised three children.

Richard Carmona, MD, MPH, FACS

Talk title: Welcome

Born to a poor immigrant family in New York City, Richard Carmona experienced homelessness, hunger, and health disparities during his youth. The experiences greatly sensitized him to the relationships among culture, health, education and economic status and ultimately shaped his future. After dropping out of high school, Dr. Carmona enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1967 where he received a GED. By the time he left active duty, he was a Special Forces, combat-decorated Vietnam veteran. He then pursued a college degree and entered medical school at the University of California – San Francisco where he won the prestigious Gold Cane award as the top graduate. Dr. Carmona became a surgeon with a sub-specialty in trauma, burns and critical care and was recruited to Tucson to establish the first trauma system in southern Arizona which he did successfully. Later, while working full time as a hospital and health system CEO, he earned a master’s degree in public health policy and administration at the University of Arizona. Dr. Carmona has served for over 34 years with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department in Tucson, including as deputy sheriff, detective, SWAT team leader and department surgeon. He is one of the most highly decorated police officers in Arizona, and his numerous awards include the National Top Cop Award, the National SWAT Officer of the Year, and the National Tactical EMS Award. Dr. Carmona is a nationally recognized SWAT expert and has published extensively on SWAT training and tactics, forensics, and tactical emergency medical support. Dr. Carmona has also served as a medical director of police and fire departments and is a fully qualified peace officer with expertise in special operations and emergency preparedness, including weapons of mass destruction. In 2006 Vice Admiral Carmona successfully completed the statutory four-year term as Surgeon General and was named vice chairman of Canyon Ranch, CEO of the health division and president of the Canyon Ranch Institute. Dr. Carmona continues his Canyon Ranch leadership role as the Chief of Health Innovations. He also serves on several public corporate boards and works with private equity and venture capital firms to identify emerging science and technology to translate to market for economic and public benefit.

Francis Collins, MD, PhD

Director, National Institutes of Health

Talk title: Arts and Health: Prescriptions for the Future

Dr. Collins is the 16th director of the National Institutes of Health. A physician-geneticist noted for his landmark discoveries of disease genes and his leadership of the Human Genome Project, Dr. Collins served as Director of the National Human Genome Research Institute at the NIH from 1993 to 2008. The Human Genome Project consistently met projected milestones ahead of schedule and under budget. This remarkable international project culminated in April 2003 with the completion of a finished sequence of the human DNA instruction book. Dr. Collins’ own research laboratory has discovered a number of important genes, including those responsible for cystic fibrosis, neurofibromatosis, Huntington’s disease and most recently, genes for type 2 diabetes and the gene that causes Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome. Prior to coming to the NIH in 1993, he spent nine years on the faculty of the University of Michigan, where he was a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator. He is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Collins was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2007 and, in 2009, the National Medal of Science, the highest honor bestowed on scientists by the United States government. Dr. Collins received a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Virginia, a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Yale University, and an MD with honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Emer Cooke, PharmD, MBA

Executive Director European Medicines Agency | Chairperson, International Coalition of Medicines Regulatory Authority

Talk title: Moving Towards Greater Regulatory Coordination: Why Regulation Matters

Emer Cooke is as of 16 November 2020 the new Executive Director of the European Medicines Agency, based in Amsterdam. She also takes the role of Chair of the International Coalition of Medicines Regulatory Authorities (ICMRA) for a term of 2 years. She was the Director responsible for all medical product-related regulatory activities at the World Health Organization in Geneva between November 2016 and November 2020. In this role, Ms. Cooke was responsible for leading WHO’s global work on regulation of health technologies (medicines, vaccines, diagnostics, vector control products and devices), coordinating the regulatory teams (Prequalification, Regulatory Systems Strengthening, and Safety), and working with member states and international partners to assure the quality, safety, and efficacy of appropriate health technologies. Ms. Cooke is a pharmacist with Masters degrees in Science and Business Administration from Trinity College Dublin. She has over 30 years’ experience in international regulatory affairs and spent 14 years (2002 to 2016) in management positions at the European Medicines Agency as Head of Inspections and Head of International Affairs respectively. From September 1998 to July 2002, she worked in the Pharmaceuticals unit of the European Commission.

Margaret “Peggy” Hamburg, MD

Dr. Margaret (Peggy) Hamburg is an internationally recognized leader in public health and medicine. She is currently serving as VP (interim) for Global biological Programs and Policy, Nuclear Threat Initiative. Dr Hamburg just completed her term as Foreign Secretary of the National Academy of Medicine, where she served as senior advisor on international matters and liaison with other Academies of Medicine around the world. She is also the immediate past Chair/President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world’s largest scientific membership organization. Dr. Hamburg is a former Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), where she was known for advancing regulatory science, modernizing regulatory pathways, and globalization of the agency. Other positions have included: Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, HHS; VP and Chief Scientist Nuclear Threat Initiative: NYC Heath Commissioner; Assistant Director, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, NIH. He is Professor of Practice at Duke-NUS and the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health. Formerly Chief Executive Officer of Singapore’s Health Sciences Authority and Deputy Director of Medical Services in MOH, Professor Lim has also held other senior positions in Singapore’s Health and Education ministries. His current roles promote capacity building and scientific excellence for health products regulation and health policies in Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific. Alan Murray

Valerie Montgomery Rice, MD, FACOG

Valerie Montgomery Rice, MD, FACOG, provides a valuable combination of experience at the highest levels of patient care and medical research, as well as organizational management and public health policy. Marrying her transformational leadership acumen and strategic thinking to tackle challenging management issues, she has a track record of redesigning complex organizations’ infrastructures to reflect the needs of evolving strategic environments and position the organization for success through sustainability tactics. The sixth president of Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) and the first woman to lead the free-standing medical institution, Montgomery Rice serves as both the president and dean. A renowned infertility specialist and researcher, she most recently served as dean and executive vice president of MSM, where she has served since 2011. Prior to joining MSM, Montgomery Rice held faculty positions and leadership roles at various health centers, including academic health centers. Most notably, she was the founding director of the Center for Women’s Health Research at Meharry Medical College, one of the nation’s first research centers devoted to studying diseases that disproportionately impact women of color. Dedicated to the creation and advancement of health equity, Montgomery Rice lends her vast experience and talents to programs that enhance pipeline opportunities for academically diverse learners, diversifies the physician and scientific workforce, and fosters equity in health care access and health outcomes. Garen Staglin

Garen is Founder and Chairman of ONE MIND (“OM”) a 501.c.3 non-profit: (1) pursuing discoveries in brain health research fostering open science principles; (2) advancing better diagnostics, treatments, early intervention; and (3) eliminating the stigma for all brain illnesses. OM leverages large-scale public/private partnerships as well as individual scientists to achieve these goals. One Mind at Work, a global coalition of 90 employers and partners, now covers more than 25 million employees and their dependents. Over 26 years, OM and the Staglin Music Festival for Brain Health have raised $480M for brain health. Garen is the Founder and Co-Chairman of the Healthy Brains Global Initiative (“HBGI”). With more than 50 volunteer global leaders, a 14-person Board, and a full-time management team, HBGI is assembling new financial sources to complete a $10 billion fund to address the projected $6 Trillion global burden of mental illness. He is on the Board of SVB, Chairman of ExL Services and Profit Velocity Solutions, is a Senior Advisor to FTV Capital, and recently Co-Chaired the $5.4.8B UCLA Centennial Campaign. He and his family founded Staglin Family Vineyard in 1985 in Napa. The Staglin’s’ motto is “Great Wine for Great Causes.” They have generated over $1.2B through causes they have led, their charity, and wine donations.

Hans Vestberg is chairman and chief executive officer of Verizon Communications, a leading provider of wireless, fiber-optic and global Internet networks and services. Prior to assuming the role of CEO in August 2018 and the role of Chairman in March 2019, Mr. Vestberg served as Verizon’s chief technology officer and president of Global Networks from 2017, with responsibility for further developing the architecture for Verizon’s fiber-centric networks. At Verizon, he has focused on transforming the businesses 2.0 customer-centric strategy, leading the company to be first in the world to deploy 5G home and mobile technology, delivering seamless experiences for customers over network assets consisting of the country’s leading 4G LTE network, the nation’s biggest residential fiber network, a global internet backbone and undersea cable network carrying much of the world’s internet traffic, and fiber assets in 45 of the top 50 markets in the U.S. Before joining Verizon in April 2017, Vestberg served for six years as president and CEO of Ericsson, a multinational networking and telecommunications equipment and services company headquartered in Sweden that provides 35 percent of the world’s 2G, 3G, and 4G mobile network infrastructures. For more than a decade after joining Ericsson in 1991, he gained broad international experience with leadership positions on four continents. He was instrumental in developing Ericsson’s industry-leading services organization, which grew three-fold during his five years of management. In 2007 he became Ericsson’s chief financial officer, and he was named CEO in 2009. As CEO, he led more than 115,000 employees as the company transformed from a focus on hardware to software and services.

Michelle A. Williams, SM ’88, ScD ’91, is Dean of the Faculty, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and Angelopoulos Professor in Public Health and International Development, a joint faculty appointment at the Harvard Chan School and Harvard Kennedy School. She is an internationally renowned epidemiologist and public health scientist, an award-winning educator, and a widely recognized academic leader. Prior to becoming Dean, she was Professor and Chair of the Department of Epidemiology at the Harvard Chan School and Program Leader of the Population Health and Health Disparities Research Programs at Harvard’s Clinical and Translational Sciences Center. Dean Williams previously had a distinguished career at the University of Washington School of Public Health. Her scientific work places special emphasis in the areas of reproductive, perinatal, pediatric, and molecular epidemiology. Dean Williams has published more than 500 scientific articles and was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2016. In 2020, she was awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor and recognized by PR Week as one of the top 50 health influencers of the year. The Dean has an undergraduate degree in biology and genetics from Princeton University, a master’s in civil engineering from Tufts University, and master’s and doctoral degrees in epidemiology from the Harvard Chan School.

Elias Zerhouni, MD

Elias Zerhouni, MD, Professor Emeritus Radiology and Biomedical Engineering, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Dr. Zerhouni was most recently the President, Global Research & Development, and a member of the Executive Committee for Sanofi from January 2011 to July 2018. Dr. Zerhouni’s academic career was spent at the Johns Hopkins University and Hospital where he was professor of Radiology and Biomedical engineering and senior adviser for Johns Hopkins Medicine. He served as Chair of the Russell H. Morgan Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences, Vice Dean for Research and Executive Vice Dean of the School of Medicine from 1996 to 2002 before his appointment as Director of the National Institutes of Health from 2002 to 2008. In that position he oversaw the NIH’s 27 Institutes and Centers with more than 18,000 employees and a budget of $29.5 billion (2008). In November 2009, President Obama appointed Dr. Zerhouni as one of the first presidential U.S. science envoys. Dr. Zerhouni also served as senior fellow to the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation from 2009 to 2010 and senior advisor to the CEO of Sanofi. Dr. Zerhouni has founded or co-founded five start-up companies, authored more than 200 publications and holds several patents. He has assumed positions on several Boards, including most recently, the board of the Lasker Foundation, Research!America and the NIH Foundation. He is also a member of the U.S. National Academy of Medicine and the U.S. National Academy of Engineering. He received the prestigious Legion of Honor medal from the French National Order in 2008, and was elected in 2010 as a member of the French Academy of Medicine and appointed as Chair of Innovation at the College de France in 2011
