Masaaki Sakakura

Principal Optical Scientist

About

I am a Principal Optical Scientist in the Cloud Infrastructure, Optics for the Cloud group at  Microsoft Research Cambridge (MRC). I have worked on laser material processing, applications of holographic laser processing and ultrafast imaging. My research interest are mechanism of laser-induced reactions and how to control them.

I obtained my B.A. in Science (Chemistry) from Kyoto University, Japan, in 1999, and obtained my Ph.D. there in 2004. After that, I worked in Kyoto University as a researcher, assistant professor, advanced technical engineer and associated professor until 2017. In 2017, I joined the Optoelectronics Research Centre in University of Southampton, UK. In 2020, I joined MRC as a visiting researcher.

In the current project, Project Silica, in MRC, I am exploring and developing new data writing methods that enable data writing more accurate, faster and at higher density for the new archival storage technology in the cloud of the next generation.
