Face Recognition Mobile App for Enterprise

Established: May 1, 2009

Internal experimental app on Windows Mobile, using our then-new Face Recognition SDK to recognize employees. Goal was to investigate how many reference images were necessary for accurate recognition, experiment with ways to smooth the registration experience, and the robustness of recognition under real world conditions.

Result: accuracy was good enough, but the user experience of taking a picture / video of someone to do recognition was too awkward. And there were no compelling user scenarios other than use as a memory aide, further undermined by the user experience (not too subtle: taking out a phone to take a picture of someone whose name you forgot). App shelved, but face recognition development continues to this day. May someday revisit the user experience using more convenient form factors such as HMDs.
