Storage hardware costs have often been quoted as price per capacity (\$/GB). A better metric is total cost per user as deployed. This balances performance, capacity and packaging constraints. That being said, it is important to recognize that hardware is only one part of the total cost of ownership for storage. Storage is now cheap and people remain expensive.
