Limiting shapes for a nonabelian sandpile growth model

We introduce the splitting model as a nonabelian variant of the abelian sandpile growth model (ASGM). For the ASGM, several limiting shape results have been proved, using the abelian property and monotonicity. Neither property holds for the splitting model, but nevertheless we present new limiting shape results, including an octagonal limiting shape.

Anne Fey taught physics in high school before obtaining her Ph.D. in stochastics at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Her research interests include self-organized criticality and cellular automata.
