Mining capacity from concurrent transmissions

  • Wenjun Hu | University of Washington

There is almost a never-ending quest to push the capacity limit for wireless networks to support growing applications. Our approach to increasing the network capacity is to promote concurrent transmissions, from a single transmitter to two or more receivers. This involves applying information theoretic techniques, while taking into account dynamic traffic conditions and low level channel behavior. The talk will center on two examples: one applying network coding, and the other applying multi-user MIMO ideas. In both cases, we propose practical designs that suit real-world conditions, and show significant benefits that were not obvious from existing information theoretic analysis.
