Let’s Talk Numbers: A Gallery of Gems from Number Theory

  • Denis Charles | Microsoft

I will attempt to give an entertaining talk about several important open problems in number theory and try to show that a cohesive program exists to solve these problems. You will see several mysteries about the distribution of prime numbers and see early astounding results which still remain the state-of-the-art and also some recent progress. At the end of the talk, hopefully, you will have a sense for the important problems in number theory, why they are important and how people are attempting to solve them.

Speaker Details

After a Ph.D. in Computational Number theory I have embarked on, what I call, a scenic tour of Microsoft. I started at the Crypto group in 2005 (then part of MSR) as a post-doc, then I joined LiveLabs in 2007 whose untimely demise in 2009 led me to AdCenter and finally back to MSR in 2012. Throughout, I have worked on fun problems and worked with awesome people. Generally my work has a somewhat math-y or algorithmic bent and more recently economics has been creeping in (ask me for details if you are interested).
