MSR/UW Symposium in Computational Linguistics
- Dan Garrette, Meliha Yetisgen | University of Washington, University of Washington
Come take advantage of this opportunity to connect with the computational linguistics community at Microsoft and the University of Washington. This is a regular opportunity for computational linguists at the University of Washington and at Microsoft to discuss topics in the field and to connect in a friendly informal atmosphere. We will have two talks (see below), followed by informal mingling. There is a great amount of information captured in physicians’ comments made during health care. Increasingly, researchers are finding valuable uses by mining and aggregating this data in clinical and translational studies which lead to improved patient care. However, most patient information that describes patient state, diagnostic procedures, and disease progress is represented in free-text form. For meaningful use, one of the challenges is to capture the rich semantics surrounding the medical concepts in partially structured clinical text. In this talk, I will summarize the ongoing text processing research at the UW-BioNLP group with examples of clinical applications.
