Searching for Answers (in Source Code)

  • Jonathan Sillito | University of Calgary

Source code search can be seen as part of a larger process in which a programmer uses a range of development tools to help answer questions about a code base. In this talk I’ll discuss the kinds of questions programmers need to answer, and look closely at how they use search tools to help answer those questions based on a recent laboratory study. I’ll also present some ideas about how today’s source code search tools can be improved to better support programmers in finding the information they’re looking for.
