Panel: Preparing for the next generation of developer communities

As more people are programming for a purpose, they have turned to online communities and resources to grow their developer skills. But there are a few open questions about how people are engaging in these communities: Does everyone consider themselves to be ‘developers’? How are practitioners supporting the evolution of these communities? How can we help ensure the next generation thrives? Join Denae Ford Robinson, Senior Researcher from the Software Analysis and Intelligence (SAINTes) Group at Microsoft Research, who will be moderating a panel on how we can better prepare for the next generation of software developers. She will be leading a conversation with panelists on what this evolution looks like from the communities the panelists serve and where opportunities lie to be intentional about impact. The panelists include Mala Kumar, Director of Tech for Social Good at GitHub; Bobby Dresser, Director of Product for the Communities Team at GitHub; and Margaret Price, Principal Strategist for CS Education at Microsoft. They’ll cover reflections on online community trends for developers, insights from recent studies on developer communities, and projections on the horizon of this shifting frontier.
